Glass

March 5, 2008, Omote-sando, Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo.

The buildings there are spectacular. Edgier than Akasaka and more exclusive than Shibuya, between which Aoyama is sandwiched.

The main use of glass in architecture is to allow light in, illuminating the enclosed space. These transparent features highlight and, at the same time, obfuscate what is within. Glass can reduce the intensity of light passing through, limit the wavelengths passing through, focus or spread the light.

The light from within the building, in addition to the exterior light reflected off the glass surfaces, create an amusing design which changes throughout the day. The non-glass parts of the building add to the pattern. Design is all about light. How much of what wavelength is to be reflected into the viewers eyes.
