Value

Dark and Light, Black and White, Day and Night. One is the absence of the other. One absorbs while the other reflects. Daylight directly from sunlight, or moonlight indirectly from it.

Brightness. The perception elicited by luminance. Each person observes this subjectively. We compare to be able to know brightness, lightness or value. A very light gray next to a very dark gray will seem like white and black. Too much brightness will blow out highlights, too little brightness will result in the loss of shadow detail.
